Frequently asked questions

What type of varicose veins can be treated with foam sclerotherapy?

All types and sizes of varicose veins can be treated with sclerotherapy, from the smallest spider veins to varicose veins as thick as your finger. Micro-sclerotherapy is the optimal treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins.

Foam is often used instead of a liquid sclerosant for large varicose veins of the side branch veins and trunk veins, as sclerosant foam has an even more powerful effect. With tortuous side branch varicose veins, foam sclerotherapy has the great advantage that the foam can reach every angle of the diseased vein, while it is often impossible to push a rigid laser probe through the twisted vein. Foam sclerotherapy of trunk veins is also a good and cost-effective therapeutic option. The new National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines recommend foam sclerotherapy in preference to surgery for the treatment of trunk veins.
